Known Incompatibilities

  • The 3rd edition software has proved problematic with Windows 95 and Windows NT. We recommend the software only be run on Windows 98/ME/2000.

Known Problems

General installation quirkiness with Locked CD-ROM

  • We have received several installation reports both on the locked and unlocked CD-ROMs. The errors range from bizarre errors on finding certain DLLs to complete lockups when people insert the CD.  Of the folks who have reported this error, most noted that the CD had problems with their regular CD-ROM drive, but worked just fine in their CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD drive. Go figure!

The Fix

  • Locked CD:
Copy the TOTAL folder from the CD-ROM to the user's desktop. Run setup from the copied TOTAL folder. Delete the folder after the program has been installed successfully.
  • Unlocked CD:
Create a folder on your PC [name it anything you like]. Copy all the files from the CD-ROM except the BIN folder to the new folder you created. (The BIN folder only stores the splash screen so there is no reason to copy that folder.) Run the setup program as before, but from the new folder you created. Delete the installation files after the program has been installed successfully.

java.lang.NullPointerException error

  • This is a very specific error having to do with the splash screen and certain incompatibilities. This fix will not fix other java errors!
  • Click on this thumbnail for a pic of the precise error:
    javapointer.gif (32002 bytes)

The Fix:

  • The software needs a smallish binary file updated so that it runs properly.
  1. Download the 1381719.bin file (right-click the link and select Save Target As... Make certain to type in the full name of the file, including the extension 1381719.bin—and change the file type from "HTML Document" to "All Files").
  2. Place the contents, 1381719.bin, in the \Program Files\Totalsem\1381719 folder on your hard drive, C: if you installed using the defaults.
  • Note that this will overwrite the existing 1381719.bin file. That's what you want it to do!
  • At this point, you should be able to run the software normally.

java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError and Other Java Errors

  • What seems to be a completely unrelated error comes after installation when folks try to run the application. Several other java related errors have appeared, such as  java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError, java.exe has generated errors, etc.
  • This seems to relate to different versions/combinations of Windows, Works, and Office, and the different ODBC (database connectivity) drivers they use.
  • Click on this thumbnail for a pic of a typical error:
    java_lang_error.jpg (32906 bytes)

The Fix:

  1. Download this file: totalsem.bat (right click and select "Save Target As..." Make certain to type in the full name of the file—totalsem.bat—including the file extension and change the file type from "HTML Document" to "All Files").
  2. Take the file, totalsem.bat, and copy it to the following folder:
    C:\Program Files\Totalsem.
  3. It should ask you if you want to replace the file that is
currently in the folder, say yes.
  4. Run the application again and you should be in good shape!
