Cisco must be planning on upgrading the CCNA exams shortly.

I couldn't swing the $199 for the CCENT NetSIM last November. Currently using the Cisco Press simulator. Boson's version looks alot more comprehensive. Even Cisco Press admits one of the selling features of their sim is the price.

If one wants to get an indepth view into networking, the Cisco certifications is the way to go. Even if I don't get the CCENT this year I do enjoy working thru the labs. Cool

Although it has been almost three years since the last upgrade of the CCNA, there has been no indication from Cisco that they will be updating it soon. This price change was simply to make the product more affordable for you guys.

For the record, prices have dropped for ALL of Boson's NetSim and ExSim MAX products for Cisco, Microsoft, and CompTIA. Not trying to be a salesman... just wanting to explain the pricing change. Smile

I appreciate it very much. Wink

If I had to choose between Microsoft and Cisco certification, it would be Cisco, hands down. Microsoft may be more practical, like with Desktop Support, but I enjoy working through the simulator and learning the technology going for the CCENT.

I read here on this site before; don't go for a certification just because it's in high demand - do what you like doing. As much as I want to stuff the entire elephant in my mouth at once, it just isn't realistically possible. However, I'll get an A+ for effort.

My main focus now is Industrial Electronics and motion control since I'll be training as an apprectice electrician in an industrial plant once I relocate to the Houston area next year. I already have the basics with an electronics degree, so it won't be that big of a hill to climb. Alot of those PLC and PID controllers utilize Ethernet for data transfer so my networking knowledge will come in handy. Cool

Apples and oranges. You can't simply choose one OR the other... because you aren't typically allowed to administer routers until you've spent some time doing server administration... and before that, desktop administration. Thus, you'll typically end up getting both... and usually Microsoft before Cisco (and CompTIA before Microsoft).

And... best of all... you don't have to choose. Nor should you.

Only one problem... without going through desktop administration, you won't likely get to network administration.

Yes, but there's another saying regarding certification that many of us say on here: certification isn't to learn new things, nor is it to show an employer what you WANT to be doing... it's to show an employer what you can ALREADY do. And as much as it would help my income to sell Cisco practice exams to every single tech out there, Cisco certification simply isn't going to be useful without real-world Cisco administration experience. Might not be what you want to hear... but it's the truth.

Will it? Two different fields, in my opinion. But it sounds like you're dead set on what you want to do regardless of the advice you might get.

Best of luck to you.

I'll have the knife and fork ready for when you spit the elephant back out again and are ready to eat him one bite at a time. Wink heehee!

Glad to be of assistance. Smile

You can say this economy meltdown has actually been a blessing in disguise for me... a fire lit under me around the second half of 2007 when housing slumped and I knew I had to get something going on in my life other than what I was currently doing. Here 31 months later I have 4 IT certifications and am a stone's throw from becoming Security+ certified.

Looking at May/June for that one. Cool
