C:Windows\system32>bcdedit /copy {current} /d "MyVHD"
The entry was successfully copied to {06588295-fe95-11d5-9835-f4d661941c96}.
C:Windows\system32>bcdedit /set <06588295-fe95-11d5-9835-f4d661941c96> device vhd=partition w:
The system cannot find the file specified.
(I tried the remaining commands just to see how they'd turn out. Same error message)
C:Windows\system32>bcdedit /set <06588295-fe95-11d5-9835-f4d661941c96> osdevice vhd=C:\vhds\myvhd
The system cannot find the file specified.
C:Windows\system32>bcdedit /vbcdedit /set <06588295-fe95-9835-f4d661941c96> detecthal on
The system cannot find the file specified.
C:Windows\system32>bcdedit /v
Can anybody shed some light on the problem I'm having editing the Boot Menu in Windows 7? I'm on Exercise 2, Chapter 2 of the Configuring Windows 7 70-680 MS Press textbook.
This is far as I get. The bootable virtual drive is in C:\VHDs\myvhd.vhd
The virtual drive shows up in Disk Management as Disk 2, Partition W:
The entry shows up in the boot menu but does not recognize a disk there -the computer will just skip to the next boot entry, which is Drive C. The book states There are several more commands, however each one returns the same "File Not Found" error at the command prompt. I am running the command shell as an administrator (right-click, Run As Administrator). I cannot sucessfully complete the exercise until I can find out why either my path is wrong or the book has an error in the printing.
Thank you,

Oh, so I'm not the only one who saw that...
I always use more than one study guide to help me prepare for an exam. Once I find a solution - and get better at the command line - I'll post it. _________________ "The Golden Rule is... He Who Has The Gold Makes The Rules. I believe I'll find my own gold... "

As a temporary solution, to edit the boot files (bcdedit) i have used Vistabootpro. Its a free download and provides a gui for editing the boot files.
I too have two books for this exam. The other one is another MS product. Their "Official" course 6292A by Byron Wright (subjet matter) and James Bentivenga (technical reviewer). |

If you folks are working from MS books, they usually post corrections. Google the book you have with corrections and you might find it. I had to do this when I was going through the MCSA books. _________________ Grumpy old man. |
