Navigating the Epic Journey to an IT Career Part One

September 4, 2023 in Uncategorized by

People always ask me how to get into an IT career.  Let’s face it, in today’s tech driven world, IT can be a smart and rewarding choice, the field offers a wide range of opportunities for those with the right skills and mindset. If you’re interested in the journey into an IT career, here are my thoughts.

Assess yourself, honestly.  What are your interests, skills, and goals. Explore your interests and strengths to determine which IT path aligns best with your aspirations.

Set time to find and take training. Most IT careers require some level of education or training, whether self-study or in a program.  Once you have an idea of where you want to be, you must find the path.  Keep in mind that IT is a dynamic field, so you can always pivot and explore new areas as you gain experience.

If you are new or transitioning to IT, self-study can take you far so commit the time.  If you are looking to break away from the entry level, select a specialization that resonates with your interests and career goals. Self-study can work for specialization, but more advanced careers may require instructor-led training.

Especially for self-study obtain certifications.  Many of my courses focus on industry known certifications; CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, Cloud+, PenTest+, and for the newbies ITF+.

Get some hands-on experience.  IT is all about getting your hands on. Consider internships, part-time jobs, or volunteer opportunities to gain practical knowledge and build your portfolio. Create personal projects or contribute to open-source projects to showcase your skills and abilities to potential employers.

For those breaking from the entry level job, follow your interest path.  Consider Internet of Things, Cloud, Cybersecurity, Data Analysis.  The IT industry is constantly evolving, so a commitment to lifelong learning is essential. Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies, attend workshops, and consider pursuing advanced certifications or degrees to advance your career.

It is who you know, network. Surround yourself with IT, attend industry conferences, meetups, and online forums to connect with professionals in your chosen field. Getting into an IT career requires dedication, continuous learning, and adaptability. Remember that perseverance and a passion for technology will be your greatest assets as you work towards achieving your IT career goals.

Stay tuned for more career information in September.

Can I learn and start a career in cybersecurity?

August 21, 2023 in Uncategorized by

In my nearly 30 years training millions of techs, I really believe we changed for the better the IT industry hiring practices.  Particularly the qualification requirements at the technical level. As a self-studied man that didn’t take the traditional college route, I’ve had great satisfaction watching companies realize the value of certifications and hands on training better job qualifiers for techs. I have been saying this for over thirty years!

In today’s interconnected world, cybersecurity threats have become more sophisticated and pervasive than ever before. The demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals, especially those with experience in security operations centers (SOC), is rapidly increasing. Organizations of all sizes and industries require dedicated teams to monitor, detect, and respond to security incidents. This high demand ensures a multitude of job opportunities and career growth prospects.

SOCs are a great place to start your cybersecurity career. Proper SOC training equips professionals with the necessary skills to understand threat landscapes, work with incident response and mitigation, and analyze threat intelligence analysis.

The bottom line is if you have enthusiasm for the field, and embrace continuous learning, you can become a cybersecurity professional who makes a difference.

I love talking to folks to hear how they are making this career change. I’ve got to say, my pals at CyberNow Labs are doing something unique to help people of any background make this pivot.

Unlocking Career Success: How Cyber Lingo Can Drive Your Career

August 13, 2023 in Uncategorized by

CompTIA certifications have emerged as a definitive standard for validating the skill competencies in cybersecurity. Beyond technical skills, one overlooked aspect of certifications is the terminology you master during your preparation.

A comprehensive understanding of cybersecurity lingo not only highlights technical expertise but also shows professionalism. Employers, clients, and peers are more inclined to trust professionals who can talk the talk. Attaining CompTIA certifications not only signifies preparedness but teaches the terms you need to know to succeed.

Professionals in this field must interact with colleagues and clients to convey intricate technical concepts, risk assessments, and mitigation strategies. Mastery of this lingo facilitates clear and efficient communication, reducing the risk of misinterpretations and fostering effective collaboration. CompTIA exams frequently feature scenario-based questions, where accurate interpretation of technical jargon is essential for precise problem-solving.

Cybersecurity frequently describes specific attack vectors, such as “phishing,” “ransomware,” “SQL injection,” and “DDoS attacks.” Familiarity with these terms empowers professionals to identify potential threats, assess risks, and enact appropriate countermeasures. CompTIA exams evaluate candidates’ proficiency in recognizing and responding to these threats effectively.

Knowledge is a tech’s armor, and familiarity with the language field is a pivotal piece of that armor. CompTIA certifications validate a professional in these certifications beyond technical knowledge. Cybersecurity lingo facilitates effective communication, practical application of skills, identification of threats, adherence to regulations, and demonstration of professionalism. As you embark on your journey towards obtaining CompTIA certifications, remember that speaking the language of cybersecurity is not only an edge but a necessity in today’s digital world.

Is Security+ “a must” for cyber? PLUS Mike LIVE Online

July 14, 2023 in Uncategorized by

Many of you know that my most cherished moments are when students tell me: “Mike I got the job!”

In my nearly 30 years training millions of techs, I really believe we changed for the better a lot of the IT industry hiring practices, especially the qualification requirements at the technical level. As a self-studied man that didn’t take the traditional college route, I’ve had great satisfaction watching companies finally realize that certifications like A+ and Network+ are clearly better job qualifiers for entry-level techs when compared to generalized liberal arts degrees.

But some say cyber is a different animal all together. Well, here’s my bottom line on if Security+ is required for entry cyber jobs:

  • Having a Security+ certificate is the single-most requested certification or knowledge qualifier across ALL entry cybersecurity job postings. You maximize your probability of qualifying for these cyber jobs by getting Security+ certified.
  • The Security+ objectives are FOUNDATIONAL for understanding core cybersecurity topics that you’ll be expected to put to use on the job in entry level cyber jobs. You WILL USE the knowledge you gain during the Security+ certification process ON THE JOB, guaranteed.

So what am I saying. If you’re serious about cyber but don’t have any hands-on experience, then getting Security+ certified is my recommended “next best step.”

But Mike what about other certs?

Of course, you can always “Stack Certs” after Security+, with CySA+, Pentest+, or venture into Certified Ethical Hacker. All of these are valuable, but for job seekers, I wouldn’t steer you in that direction. Instead, go get your hands dirty.

Whether that’s in an adjacent IT role as a Helpdesk Support Specialist or Network Administrator, as an intern or apprentice at a cybersecurity company, or through an on-the-job training program, get hands-on.

Cyber evolves so fast, most organizations don’t even have cyber figured out for themselves, much less the hiring process or qualifications. Everybody’s journey to cyber is different—Take Jawad for example. Jawad got Security+ certified, but was struggling to get a work opportunity in a competitive market that often requires prior hands-on experience and/or advanced education.

Jawad’s solution was to enroll in an on-the-job training program at CyberNow Labs. Here’s his story:

Let me know your take on this. Or join me tomorrow on a live webinar hosted by CyberNow Labs to hear more voices in the space, including Xcitium CISO, Dr. Erdal Ozkaya, and Jawad himself.

Hottest cyber jobs now going to… SNAKE HANDLERS?!

June 27, 2023 in Uncategorized by

Call in the Snake Handlers! The recent surge in cyber job demand for Python programming may keep cyber security operation centers (SOCs) from ‘getting out of hand!’ Knowledge of Python makes a big difference for job seekers—both for entry-level cyber analyst roles and for IT engineers eyeing a transition to SOC engineering positions. If you want one of the hottest cyber jobs learn Python programming.

What I’ve learned in vlogging Two Bald Nerds with CyberNow Labs’ SOC Manager Richard Chapman, is that most cyber jobs are connected to enterprise security operation centers (SOCs). These SOCs are the digital network and asset environments where the real ‘work’ of cybersecurity is done.

The problem is that SOCs are mutating in unruly and overcomplex ways… So employers are calling on Python programmers for their ability to handle the compounding complexities of cybersecurity operations.

Python Knowledge is a Game Changer if You’re Seeking the Hottest Cyber Jobs

With its extensive versatility and natural language syntax, Python programming has emerged as the preferred programming language for SOC development, integration, and automation.

Job candidates who are conversational in Python offer practical and enabling skillsets to integrate SOC technologies, automate repetitive tasks, streamline incident response workflows, and more.

That’s why my team at Total Seminars teamed up with CyberNow Labs’ instructor Dartanion Williams to produce a one-of-a-kind Intro to Python for Security Analysts course, for just this reason!

This course is set to launch in July, BUT here is how you can GET IT FOR FREE NOW:

  • Attend the 6/27 LIVE ONLINE INFO SESSION hosted by CyberNow Labs
  • Stay until the end when the Attendance Code will be provided
  • Be one of the first 50 to use the attendance code in your CyberNow Labs application

On Thursday (06/28) at 5 PM EDT, an email will be sent from enrollment@cybernowlabs.com notifying all who used the Attendance Code in their CyberNow Labs’ application if they were part of the first 50. For those first 50 applicants, details on how to access the course once available will be included

Total Seminars Discord Invitation

  1. Review and reinforce:

Regularly review the topics you’ve covered to reinforce your knowledge. Use flashcards, mind maps, or summary sheets to consolidate key points. Focus on areas of weakness to ensure a balanced understanding of all exam objectives. Create a summary of your notes from step 5. Summarizing your notes will help you remember key points. The process of taking and rewriting a summary of your notes makes the concepts stick in your mind.

  1. Exam readiness:

When you feel confident in your knowledge and have completed your study plan, it’s time to assess your readiness. Take a few more practice tests to gauge your knowledge and identify any remaining knowledge gaps. Review the exam objectives once more to ensure you haven’t missed any crucial topics.

  1. Exam day preparation:

Prioritize a good night’s sleep before the exam. On the exam day, arrive early at the test center, bring the necessary identification documents, and maintain a calm and focused mindset. Read each question carefully, manage your time effectively, and review your answers before submitting. To help you in your time management, skip the Performance Based Questions (PBQs) and do the multiple-choice questions first. Come back to the PBQs last. This will avoid getting “stuck” on the PBQs and running out of time to finish the multiple-choice questions.

Remember to consult the CompTIA certification website and official documentation for the most up-to-date information regarding the exams, registration process, and any changes to the exam objectives or policies. Good luck with your studies and the CompTIA exams!
